Adopt a Microbe

Bring Plague Tags to your organization. You pick a microbe, we send everything you need, and your team turns a keychain into a thirty-second conversation people remember.

Why it works

People keep a keychain

Hand hygiene posters get walked past. E-learning modules get clicked through. The education is correct, and nobody remembers it.

Plague Tags flips infection education from pushed to pulled. At Sault Area Hospital, people come from all over the building to get one. When they take a tag, a staff member spends thirty seconds on what the microbe is, how it spreads, and what stops it.

The keychain gets them to stop. The conversation is what protects them.

Pick your first microbe

Each microbe comes with its own card, keychain and display. Most organizations start with the one that matters most on their units this season.

Virus

Influenza

Influenza A and B
Found
Anywhere people gather. Serious illness is more likely for adults 65 and over, young children, people who are pregnant, and people with chronic conditions.
Gets around by
Respiratory droplets when someone coughs, sneezes or talks.
Temperament
Spreads before you even know you're sick.
Good with
The flu vaccine, and clean hands. Soap and water or sanitizer both work.

C. difficile

Clostridioides difficile

In the bowel. Higher risk for people who recently took antibiotics, adults 65 and over, and people in hospital or long-term care.
Gets around by
Hardy spores on unwashed hands and surfaces like bed rails, toilets and wheelchairs.

Good with
Soap and water. Sanitizer is less effective against its spores.

Clean hands, plus vaccines and antibody products that cut the risk of serious illness.
Adopt RSV
The MRSA Plague Tag character

How adoption works

Four steps to launch day

1

Pick a microbe and a date

Choose the microbe that matters most to your units and set a real launch date. Run it as an event, not a handout.

2

We send your kit

Cards, keychains, displays and a coordinator guide arrive ready to use, in English and French.

3

Brief your team in ten minutes

A short huddle and a staff card give everyone the same thirty-second script.

4

Launch day

Put the display up and hand out tags with the conversation. Start with patients on precautions, their families, and the staff caring for them.

After launch  Keep tags stocked, note the stories you hear, send us a rough count, and reorder when you're ready for the next microbe. About a week of light preparation in total. There is nothing for your IT department to host, install or integrate.

More microbes on the way

The collection keeps growing

New microbes are added as each one is researched, written and reviewed. Adopting organizations hear about each release first.

Want one that isn't here yet? Your organization can commission its own microbe and launch it first.

Plague Tags for schools

Bring the microbes to class

Schools get a classroom package built around learning by playing. Your teacher runs each session with the instructions we send.

  • 1One microbe per session. Each package introduces a single microbe.
  • 2Play to learn. Students play the Plague Tags games and read their microbe card.
  • 3Show what you learned. A short quiz at the end shows what each student picked up.
  • 4Collect them all. Sign up for more sessions and students build their collection one microbe at a time.

Students keep the collectible cards. Teachers send the anonymous quiz results back to us, so we can see what students are learning.

Questions

Before you adopt

What does it cost?

Every program is quoted for your organization. Tell us roughly how many people you want to reach, and we'll reply with a quote.

Is everything in French too?

Yes. Cards, displays and the coordinator guide all come in English and French, and the website is fully bilingual.

How many tags do we need?

That depends on how many people you want to reach. Most organizations start with one microbe and reorder as tags run out.

Do we need IT to set anything up?

No. Every tag links to plaguetags.ca, which we run. There is nothing to host, install or integrate.

Who is behind Plague Tags?

The Plague Tags team at Sault Area Hospital, led by Dr. Lucas Castellani, Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control. Every fact is reviewed by the hospital's infectious diseases team.

Can we adopt more than one microbe?

Yes. Many organizations start with one and add the next one each season.

Can we get a microbe that isn't in the collection?

Yes. Your organization can commission a new microbe, and we build the character, card, keychain and page for it. A minimum order applies.

Do you work with schools?

Yes, through classroom sessions. See Plague Tags for schools above.
